Creating A Vision

It’s always been our mission to make better coffee by doing it together, and we make it our goal to be intentional about core values, our philosophy, and our process. As I am sure you have seen either our social media or if you have come by to our recently open cafe (carry out only), we have some new, amazing murals at our flagship location at Douglas and Madison. In the theme of telling our story, the story of coffee, and plus a little nod one of our exclusive vendors we commissioned local artist and our friend Hannah Scott.

MEET HANNAH SCOTT

Hannah is a the co-owner of Stamp Yo Face! and Vortex Souvenir. She has been a part of our creating our vision for quite some time now. Her creative vision and work as an artist and illustrator helped with our new image when moved from our first location to our Madison and Douglas location. She created our first mural which inspired some incredible imagery that is used on our menus and coffee packaging. After all this time, we thought would be fitting to give her a huge shout out for her time, her creative vision, and of course her legendary skills and talent.

I’ve loved working for Reverie in the past, and I was thrilled when Andy reached out with this fresh opportunity. Reverie has always been a place in Wichita that has felt inspiring to me, through the amazing coffee they produce to the creative community they foster.

What’s your background as an artist?

“Aside from drawing constantly when I was young, my background as a professional artist started after I received my BFA in Fine Art from Wichita State University in 2014. I’ve carved a career path for myself mainly through freelance illustration work. Drawing portraits, illustrating designs for private and commercial use and painting murals are currently my main modes of production.”

What does this mural hope to say?

“It’s clear to me – and no doubt many others – that Reverie is a strong collective of very passionate individuals. Passionate about coffee, obviously, but also passionate about collaboration, innovation and community. They push for meaningful relationships and quality production in every aspect of their business, without sacrificing human connection. The mural boils down these ideas into the simple story of coffee production, from harvesting plants to the first sip of brewed coffee. The entire process is in the hands of those who take great care in their work and there is passion woven into each step, resulting in exceptional coffee that has the power to energize and connect humanity together. I hoped for this mural to represent the almost alchemic quality of coffee – the conversion of organic matter into gold.”

The mural is telling the story of coffee production. I imagined the figures with their own designations based on their role in the process. The Harvester, The Roaster, The Brewer, The Savorer. Each cannot exist without the others, all reliant on each other to continue their livelihood that thrives on purpose and value.

What did you enjoy most about working on these murals?

“I always love the physical aspect of painting murals where I can just get into a zone and paint all day. But what I appreciated most about this mural was Andy and the team’s trust in me to create something that represented Reverie while still allowing me to exercise creative control through the whole process. This is something that I’m always grateful for, having that trust between the business and the artist. I feel like that’s where the best work can really be made, and I loved that about this project in particular.”

What exciting things can we expect next from you?

“I’ve got a couple of other murals on the horizon as well and overall I’m just so thankful for that. That’s all I can hope for right now, I’ll take each project as it comes with a large dose of fervor and gratitude and I’ll continue moving forward one day at a time.”
