Birds!

“This coffee is for the birds!”

This saying normally has a negative connotation. Yet, as I write this blog, “for the birds” is good. Our new coffee, Guatemala Guay’b Asociacion Civil, is Bird Friendly Certified coffee. This certification was developed by Smithsonian scientists in the late 1990s to conserve bird habitat and protect migratory songbirds. Grown to help protect birds, this coffee is considered Organic Certified and Fairtrade. With habitation loss being a driving force in globally declining bird populations—a total loss of 3 billion birds since 1970—it is vital that coffee farms use different techniques to help attract birds and do away with pesticides. By purchasing Guay’b, we are doing a small part to help raise awareness.

Guay’b Asociacion is a cooperative made up entirely of Popti’, Kanjobal, and Mam ethnic groups, who undertake ancestral practices that are respectful of the natural environment. Guay’b is from the Mayan language Popti’, which means “mutual aid”. With the attention that this cooperative has in growing their coffee, we have a great Guatemalan coffee to offer you! You will find tasting notes of hazelnut, dark chocolate, and amaretto. At Reverie Roasters, we haven’t had a single-origin coffee this year with nutty notes, so it is great to find one we all enjoy.

This is Jason Hendry signing off, to better coffee!
